Automation Design Engineer

Job Description

GS Automation is an integrator of intelligent Building Automation Systems (automatic temperature control, lighting, and energy management), Network Infrastructure, and Access Control and Security Systems serving clients across the United States. We work with facility owners, architects, engineers, contractors, and management companies to create innovative solutions tailored to meet the unique needs of our customers.

The Automation Design Engineer performs technical and project management duties. Understands and identifies project requirements and performs independent technical work on basic tasks within one’s own discipline. Provides guidance to other team members on completion of duties. This engineering position is responsible for the design of quality building automation control practices for assigned projects. Specific responsibilities shall include, but not be limited to, both pre contract and post contract work as described below:

Job Responsibilities

  • Develops advanced systems designs within own discipline with minimal supervision.
  • Create building automation and integrated system drawings and reports.
  • Prepares project deliverables per the client’s intent and scope of work in GS’s proposal.
  • Actively participates in the engineering/professional community to build personal knowledge and professional growth
  • Performs duties to assist or act as the project manager as follows:
  • Gives input or creates plans to complete tasks within the project timeline and budget,identifies required precursors from other disciplines in a timely fashion.
  • Fully understands and advises clients of GS’s service offerings.
  • Meets or exceeds utilization goals and adheres to project budget.
  • Identifies and reports potential roadblocks and competing client and coworker priorities that may inhibit the ability to maintain the project scope, schedule, and budget.
  • Develops understanding of GS’s project management systems.

Required Knowledge and Skills

  • Four (4) year college, engineering or technical, degree required or equivalent work experiencewith programmable logic controller (PLC)/industrial controls a plus
  • Good understanding and technical knowledge of HVAC equipment and systems
  • Good understanding and technical knowledge of access and/or building automation systems
  • Able to read, analyze, and interpret technical documents and specifications, technical procedures, and government regulations
  • Proficient in applicable software (i.e. AutoCAD and Revit)
  • Extensive experience with Microsoft programs such as Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Organizational skills including, but not limited to, the ability to handle multiple demands and assignments, the ability to prioritize tasks effectively and efficiently
  • Established customer service skills
  • Good verbal and written communication skills including, but not limited to, listening effectively,and soliciting input from others
  • Knowledge of industry codes and standards: ASHRAE, NEC, NFPA, UL, etc.
  • Knowledge of electrical safety standards and practices
  • Comfortable working in a construction environment

Preferred Knowledge and Skills

  • Other professional certifications (LEED, CEA, BEP, PE, etc.) a bonus
  • Experience working with building automation vendors (Johnson Controls, Honeywell, etc.) highly preferred
  • IT knowledge also highly preferred
